On Reading

For a first post, I figured I could start with one of the first things I wrote that fits the theme of this site. Here is something I wrote in 2006 when I was 16.

For a first post, I figured I could start with one of the first things I wrote that fits the theme of this site. Here is something I wrote in 2006 when I was 16. At the time I was even more of an avid reader than I am now, but perhaps the message can also apply to other forms of entertainment.

On Reading

Reading. What is it? Why, among all other things, do people read? And, possibly more important, why do they choose the works they do? Because each person is unique this answer is different for everyone. Some read to try and get away from the world; others feel they are in the world only when reading. Some read for pleasure, others for knowledge. Or, trying to get the most from their experience, their readings will be mixed.

To go in more depth, one’s nature is a major determinate in their reason to read and their choice in books. If one does not like the world they live in, they may read to get away from it. In order to avoid accepting their world, they delve into the world of books. Although appealing, this can actually hurt their health. If one avoids accepting the world and chooses to live in a world of fantasy, they become disconnected, hindering their ability to work with other people. Others may rely too much on books, which perverts their view on how the world actually works. Some books can raise a persons knowledge and understanding, but to get the basis one needs it takes experience. You must be out in the world to understand how it works.

This does not satisfy everyone’s reasons, but it gives a general idea of the variety in existence. Said variety keeps one from making too many general conclusions; however, one is easily found. Control your reading, or you may lose touch with the world around you. Put down your book, your essay, your magazine. Stop reading, and spend some time with your friends, family, and other loved ones. You will be happy you did.
